Each raw material in Padang rendang has its own meaning and philosophy. Quoting the Sari Bundo page, each of the main ingredients mentioned has an implied meaning about the social strata of the Minangkabau community, namely;

The beef used in rendang has various meanings. Meat is a depiction of Niniak Mamak, Datuak, or Penghulu. They are figures of people who lead their people as traditional leaders so that they live in harmony and in accordance with community norms.

Santan (coconut milk) describes a group of intellectuals who often help traditional elders solve problems.

Pepper in Padang rendang depicts the figure of a cleric who upholds Islamic law in society.

the spices symbolize the whole of Minangkabau society.

Rendang cuisine is not only a prima donna in the eyes of the Minang people and Indonesia. According to a survey conducted by Cables News Network in 2001 and 2017, rendang was nominated for the world’s most delicious dish based on a reader’s choice of 35,000 voters beating out sushi and Tom Yang Goong from Thailand.

In 2011, rendang was named a dish that was ranked first on CNN International’s list of the World’s 50 Most Delicious Foods. In 2018, rendang was officially designated as one of Indonesia’s five national dishes.

It didn’t stop there, finding rendang to be the most delicious dish in the world, Gordon Ramsay, a world-renowned chef, fueled his curiosity about rendang by flying directly to West Sumatra.
